1. Melody

  • 3-5: Advanced melody concepts like contour, arpeggios, scale degrees, and analysis.
  • 6-8: Key changes, ear training, melody with bass, composition, and parallelism.

2. Dynamics

  • K-2: Introduction to dynamics, understanding volume, contrast, and basic terminology.
  • 3-5: Advanced dynamics including terms like pianissimo and fortissimo, vocal phrasing, crescendos/decrescendos, and performance.
  • 6-8: Complex dynamic markings, conducting, performance techniques, analysis, and notation.

3. Harmony

  • K-2: Identifying harmony, chords, 2-part textures, parallel motion, and composition.
  • 3-5: Analysis, ostinatos, consonance, dissonance, major and minor harmonies.
  • 6-8: Advanced harmony concepts including analysis, performing, composing, notation, and multipart harmonies.

4. Rhythm

  • K-2: Foundational rhythm concepts, call and response, mixed rhythms, improvisation, and composition.
  • 3-5: Group performances, movement and dance, composing, improvising, and understanding waltz.
  • 6-8: Conducting, triplets, subdivisions, notation, and performance.

5. Texture

  • K-2: Understanding texture through monophony, polyphony, analysis, and creation.
  • 3-5: Rhythmic texture, instrumentation, analysis, and key changes.
  • 6-8: Harmony in texture, instrumentation, analysis, composing, and performing.

6. Timbre

  • K-2: Exploring timbre, tone color, instruments and voices, performance, and sound effects.
  • 3-5: Comparing different timbres, vocal timbre, performance, and analysis.
  • 6-8: Distortion, emotion and tone in timbre, vocal timbres in popular music.
